The Deaths of Saints Peter and Paul

The image represents the martyrdom of both St. Peter and St. Paul, who according to tradition were executed on the same day, though not in the same place. The Golden Legend says that when Peter's cross was brought out he asked to be placed on it upside-down, not being worthy to die the same way as Jesus.
As in all accounts since at least the 4th century, Paul is beheaded.
